DENVER, CO (May 2, 2022) – This coming Sunday, May 8th, is Mother’s Day 2022 – a celebration honoring mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
History of Mother’s Day
In honor of her late mother, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia organized a day of celebration to honor mothers in 1908. Many states, towns, and churches adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday and Jarvis founded the Mother’s Day International Association to continually promote the holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a decree stating the second Sunday of May a day for “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country” to make it an official holiday.
Mother’s Day and Greeting Cards
Mother’s Day cards began being created and produced in the early 1920s by Hallmark and other card makers. Today more than 113 million cards are exchanged, making Mother’s Day the third-largest card-sending holiday in the United States and the largest for the Hispanic community.
This year’s 33rd Annual Louie Awards, the annual greeting card competition held by the non-profit Greeting Card Association (GCA), honored beautiful Mother’s Day cards from six talented finalists; Fine Moments, paper and stuff, E. Frances Paper, Hallmark, NIQUEA.D, and Quilling Card.
Fine Moments brought home the victory for Mother’s Day Cards $5 and below, “Being a parent, especially a mother, has to be one of the toughest jobs in the world. Having our peers recognize our fun play on words truly means a lot and it validates the tone and direction of our line. We are truly honored to be included amongst the winners of the 33rd Annual Louie Awards”.
And Quilling Card for cards above $5, “It’s a special feeling to know that your design resonates with others in a way it was intended to. Being able to create a card that many people can connect with in their own unique way is what we are always striving to accomplish!

Greeting card publishers, artists, writers, suppliers, and retailers have a special role in helping people honor their mothers. GCA encourages retailers to share photos of their Mother Day’s displays on social media using the hashtags #MothersDay2022 #MothersDayDisplay, and #sendacarddeliverasmile
In need of Mother’s Day cards? It is not too late to shop – 50% of the sales of Mother’s Day cards happen the week before the holiday. Stop by your local book shop, grocery store, or other retail store to pick out the perfect card.
“The tradition of sending Mother’s Day cards continues, and continues to evolve,” says GCA Executive Director Nora Weiser. “Just as mothers continue to redefine motherhood, Mother’s Day cards are now being designed to recognize and honor the many maternal roles people play in the lives of others.” Celebrate the mothers and maternal figures in your life by sending a card and delivering a smile.
